The National Irrigation Administration (NIA) in Bicol is set to inaugurate the P18 million Matagbac Communal Irrigation Project (CIP) in Barangay Matagbac, Milagros town in Masbate.

Ed Yu, NIA regional spokesman, said the irrigation project was completed last month and will be turned over to the local government unit on July 29. Meanwhile, NIA regional manager Vicente R. Vicmudo said the irrigation system will benefit some 200 farmers tilling rice. “The completion of Matagbac CIP will benefit some 200 hectares of rice land (and) is a big boost to the lives of farmers in Milagros, Masbate,” Vicmudo said. The NIA regional office is undertaking the construction and rehabilitation of 21 irrigation projects in the province of Masbate with a total allocation of P40.6 million.

These projects will irrigate 56 hectares of previously rainfed or un-irrigated ricelands and restore and rehabilitate irrigation facilities in 276 hectares. Masbate’s level of irrigation development as of Dec. 31, 2014 is merely 27.72 percent, the lowest among the six provinces in the Bicol region.
